Never looked at a price sheet? You could buy several 403's for the price of a 755. The 755 started out a LOT better for a LOT more money.
History is littered with products that got too expensive for the market, and improving materials made cheaper models better than before. At the 755's inception better designs were needed due to amp power available, materials and QC. By the 60's cheaper designs could be built that sounded almost as good.. The later 755's are not better than early ones, IMHO they were cheapened.
If the 403 was sold/made for the same applications, and was made later, then in my mind the 403 replaced the 755. Materials/designs/whatever is irrelvant. On the other hand, I don't think it matters too much. We all know the reason why sellers like to say the 403 replaced the 755..... MONEY. A 755A is worth a ton of money, and the 403 is not. It's the same as sellers mentioning Altec when selling University products.
they are.
honest to G-D,
they sound like an electrostat.
even the ceramic versions.
they beam tho ...
quite true.
at mc gee radio in 1966,
a 755c could be had for just under $31 us.
an 8 inch stamped steel frame speaker
was available for $ 1.95.
need 25 for the ceiling in your grocery store,
to keep the Muzak flowing?
(or make sure that busted jar of 'spin blend' gets cleaned up)
$775 for the altecs or $48.75,
for whatever the others were.
you can see the difference.
Hole in your argument was it was sold at the same time, I posted a link to the catalog page. The 755 was discontinued because it just got too expensive. But Altec did NOT stop making one and make the other. For a long time you could buy either. BTW the 755 did not get discontinued till Altec's money problems began. It was a casualty of that.
I don't see that as a flaw. If Altec sold the 403 for the same applications as the 755, after the 755 ceased to be made, then it replaced the 755. The original design/marketing intentions don't matter at that point. Post 755, if someone wanted an 8" speaker for a 755 application, then the 403 was it, hence the 403 replaced the 755. Unless there was some other 8" Altec sold too?
I felt obligated to post these..

AB please feel free to move this to the other thread. My view only shows recent posts and I can't get search to bring it up.

Being so lazy I likely won't show up for my funeral, it occurred to me, when writing just copy and paste this:
http://www.hostboard.com/forums/
Open the picture in another tab or window, right click then copy image location (this copies its URL)... place cursor in center of above and paste....

Done .....
:) What you did works fine, I was thinking the image thread but it wouldn't come up in search even with several keywords...Hmm- is it OT threads that are excluded in search?
Thanks!
